What Is an Audiogram?

An audiogram is a graph that plots your hearing thresholds across a range of frequencies. It is the standard output of pure-tone audiometry and the universal language of hearing healthcare. Each point represents the softest sound you can detect at a given pitch, measured in decibels Hearing Level (dB HL).

How Does This Online Hearing Test Work?

This test uses the modified Hughson-Westlake adaptive threshold method, the same approach used in clinical audiology. You will hear tones at different pitches and volumes through your headphones. Each ear is tested independently at 8 standard frequencies (250-8000 Hz). The test uses warble tones (frequency-modulated tones) to reduce standing wave effects in your ear canal, following ISO 389-7 standards.

How Accurate Is an Online Hearing Test?

With proper calibration, this test provides results within approximately +/- 10-15 dB of clinical audiometry. This makes it useful for screening (identifying likely hearing loss) and pattern detection (seeing the shape of loss across frequencies). It is not a substitute for a professional hearing evaluation in a sound-treated booth with calibrated equipment. If results indicate hearing loss, please see an audiologist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need headphones?
Yes. Headphones are required because each ear must be tested independently. Over-ear headphones provide the best results.

How long does it take?
Approximately 8-12 minutes including setup and calibration.

Can this test detect tinnitus?
This test measures hearing thresholds, not tinnitus directly. However, certain audiogram patterns (such as a notch at 4 kHz) are strongly associated with tinnitus from noise exposure.

Should I see a doctor after this test?
If any of your thresholds exceed 25 dB HL, or if you have significant differences between ears, we recommend consulting an audiologist for a comprehensive evaluation.

Medical Disclaimer: This online hearing test is a screening tool designed to give you an indication of your hearing ability. It is not a clinical hearing evaluation and does not constitute a medical diagnosis. Results are approximate and depend on your headphones, device volume, listening environment, and calibration accuracy. If you suspect you have hearing loss, tinnitus, ear pain, dizziness, or any ear-related symptoms, please consult a qualified audiologist or ENT physician.

I can't hear anything?

No tone was playing just now.
Try to respond only when you hear a tone.

Right Ear Complete!

Now we will test your left ear. Make sure your headphones are still on correctly.
